Top 3 Tips for a Stunning Baby Keepsake

💡 My Top Tips for Creating a Beautiful Baby Keepsake

Thank you for purchasing our Baby 3D Keepsake Kit! As a professional life caster, I’ve helped many families capture their baby’s precious moments in 3D. Here are my top tips to help you get the best possible results, something many people overlook!

1. Timing Is Everything

When working with alginate, time is limited—you typically have 60 seconds before it begins to set. That’s why picking the right time to take the impression is essential.

  • Try casting when your baby is calm or asleep—after a feeding or during a nap works best.

  • Avoid times when the baby is fussy or restless, as movement can distort the mold.

The calmer your baby, the smoother the process and the better the results.

2. Don’t Go It Alone – Ask for Help

Having a second pair of hands makes a huge difference:

  • One person should be in charge of mixing the materials (alginate or plaster).

  • The other can comfort and position your baby, ensuring their hand or foot stays gently in place.

This teamwork reduces stress and keeps everything running smoothly, especially since the setting time is short.

3. Tap the Container to Eliminate Air Bubbles (Twice!)

To achieve a clean, bubble-free keepsake, it’s important to tap the container during two key steps:

🟡 Step 1 – After Pouring the Alginate Into the Cup:
Once you’ve mixed your alginate and poured it into the container:

  • Gently tap the sides and bottom of the container.

  • This helps any trapped air bubbles escape before placing your baby’s hand or foot inside.

🟡 Step 2 – After Pouring the Casting Powder (Plaster) Into the Mold:
Once the alginate mold has set and you've removed your baby’s hand or foot:

  • Mix the casting powder as instructed, and pour it into the mold.

  • Tap the sides and bottom again.

💡 These two tapping steps make a huge difference in the overall quality of your keepsake—so don’t skip them!

4. Shape and Smooth Your Cast for a Professional Finish

After your casting has fully dried, you may notice small rough edges or uneven areas—especially on the back of the cast. Here’s how to refine it for a perfect display:

  • Use a fine cheese grater or microplane to gently shave down any rough edges or excess material. It’s great for cleaning up around the fingers and toes.

  • To ensure the cast sits flush inside the frame, gently sand the back of the cast using sandpaper or a sanding block until it’s smooth and level.

  • This makes it much easier to glue the cast securely inside the frame and ensures it fits nicely, without bulging or shifting.

💡 Take your time with this step—it can make the difference between a nice keepsake and one that looks truly polished and frame-ready.

🧺 Bonus Tip: Choose the Right Container Size

Picking the right container can make your casting much easier:

  • Use a container just slightly bigger than the hand or foot you’re casting. This keeps the alginate close to the skin and improves detail.

  • For small hands/feet: empty yogurt tubs, margarine tubs, or disposable cups work great.

  • For newborns, a disposable cup can often fit a whole hand or foot perfectly.

  • Make sure your baby’s hand or foot doesn’t touch the sides or bottom of the container—this will interfere with the final shape.

💡 Pro tip: Mix the alginate in a larger bowl first, then pour it into your casting container for more control and cleaner results.

Relax, have fun, and enjoy preserving this beautiful memory with your baby!
